India’s largest ship building order worth 1.06 billion dollars, has been bagged by none other than Pipavav shipyard limited, the first private sector ship building yard in Western Gujarat.

Pipavav, a shipbuilding and offshore fabrication company,has started the construction of big ships with a steel cutting ceremony for the first four of the 26 bulk carriers on order.

The total order at the moment is for 26 new 74,5000 deadweight (dwt) Panamax Bulk carriers.

These carriers are used to transit the Panama canal to transport coal,grain, iron ore as well as other comodities.

The Twenty-six ships will all be of the same design and this order on the shipyard order book will most definitely place the Pipavav shipyard as the number two as far as these carriers go, ahead of Japan,China and Korea.

Ray Stuart, the CEO of this shipyard said that this is the beginning of bigger things and that this order meant that they are changing scale. He continued by pointing out that they have had relationships with other shipyards but as a result of this order, the company is changing scale to bigger orders and for our company Barry Rogliano to market it.

Pipavav shipyard is the world’s sixth largest shipping facilitty and one that has about 500,000 deadweight tonnes (DWT).

With India’s Punj Lloyd limited, an ONGC pre-qualifier and a major share holder and co-promoter of this shipyard, this shipyard will be on the fast rack with regard to shipping.

In addition to all this, Sembcorp Marine, the longtime technical advisor to Pipavav is also the fabricator for the offshore industry and that makes it easier for Pipavav to enter this sector.

Pipavav shipyard is also planning to set up ship repair facilities as there is a definite lack of such repair yards near the Gulf region as well as Singapore.

This shipyard is also planning to enter the naval as well as the repair sector so as to take care of the needs of the every growing needs of the Indian navy!
