“Aggressively lowering the blood sugar as close as possible to the normal levels appeared to increase the risk of fatal heart attack or strokes” says a recent research.
Researchers stopped a major clinical trial on the treatment of diabetes which of greater risk because they found the opposite of what they expected. The study of Type2 diabetes sponsored by the federal government focused on 10,000 adults. Along with diabetes the patients who are in the study also had cardio vascular disease or at least two other risk factors. About 65% of diabetics patient die from heart disease or stroke.
Three approaches of treatment were used such as intensive lowering of blood sugar, lowering blood pressure and reducing blood fat. Researchers hope to prove that if treatment for lowering blood sugar were increased, it will give good results.
After finding that forcefully lowering blood sugar to normal levels will increase the risk of heart attack or stroke, the National Institutes of Health stopped the research. The deaths recorded among forcefully treated patient are 257 compared to teh203 who had taken the standard care. The reason is unknown for the death of aggressively treated patients. Researchers ruled out the possibility of a link between extremely low blood sugar and death. They also did not find any link between Avandia, a drug suspected to increase heart attack or any other combination of drugs and the death rates.
Researchers also planned to reexamine the schedule of the treatment whether they can find something else to get an explanation. The American Diabetes Association is standing by the recommendation that the people with Type2 diabetes should keep their blood sugar below 7% and should also consult a doctor to set a right goal.
According to some researchers the patients having heart disease or with several risk factors should keep their blood sugar at around 7%. Before changing the treatment, the patient should consult their respective doctors.
Researchers also have an opinion that although there is an uncertainty caused by studies, to avoid risk of having kidney disease, blindness and amputations due to diabetes, the patient should control their blood sugar.
