When the Scientists have first developed vaccines for cancer treatment they were hoping that this therapy would fully cure the cancer. Scientists were using the body’s own immune system to fight against the infected cell. But the advanced studies prove it wrong as treatment shows the risks of harmful side affects.
To comment on the findings published the June 10 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, relating to the harmful after effect of skin cancer immunization therapy, Dr. Louis M. Weiner, director of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. stated that all treatments have potential side effects, and we have to be very thoughtful about how and to whom we apply those treatments, and how we follow the patients we treat to assure appropriate safety.
Like all other vaccines, the cancer vaccines were also developed to stimulate the body’s own immune system to fight against the malignant cells. The studies revealed the antigen which was stimulated to form the antibodies to kill the infected cells had chances of affecting the healthy tissues also.
During the research from National Cancer Institute, scientist tested this treatment on mice. They have taken T-cells of mice from the main blood stream. This is then cultured in the lab with the melanoma-related target. T- Cells are then re-injected into the mice body to fight the cancer. Later the study shows the side affects such as de-pigmentation of skin or even attacks on thyroid.
Dr Wiener stated that the patients who are suffering from the deadly diseases such as cancer would not mind accepting irritating side affect treatment as long as they survive the fatal disease like cancer. The experiments also showed that there was significant side effect to the eyes after the vaccination. This side effect could however be treated by injecting steroids into the eye which would kill the T-cells. He also suggested that proper care has to taken by the researchers in the development of new immune therapy for cancer treatment and also understanding the future side affects and there possible treatments.
