“I can’t remember much, Mom. My teachers are not happy with me neither are the class mates ready to make me a friend.” This is what your 8 years old child tells you in reply to a query by you after seeing him upset for days.
Memory problems are quite common these days. Whether its kids or elders, every age group is going through this problem. Recently, a study has found out strange results regarding memory and its relation with doodling. Sounds weird, I know!
This study has shown that if one doodles while listening to something, one will remember more than those who have not squiggled while listening to it. This means that teachers must quit scolding the kids for being inattentive who draw or sketch while a lecture is in progress!
The subjects of this research were 40 adults, who were made to listen to a phone message, and had to remember it. Half of these subjects did nothing and just stood there listening to the message, while the other half involved in doodling while listening. Later, all of them were asked to recall what they had listened to. Results were amazing. Those who kept on sketching and squiggling and doodling managed to remember 29% more than those who kept on listening to the message quietly.
Doodles are not only a way to boost up your memory but also they are a way to show the internal thoughts and feelings of the scribbler. It is an established rule that angular, floral, circular, shady etc doodles depict different kinds of mental state of the one who squiggles, like if they are happy or sad, confused or clear in thoughts etc. Other ways to boost up your memory and relax your brain include word games and numerical games.
