“Because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection, FSIS has determined them to be unfit for food and the company is recalling the products” says the Agricultural Secretary.

In February 2008 there was a massive destruction of beef took place in the history of U.S. The beef produced between February 2006 and 2008 at the Hallmark/Westland meat packing company in Chino in California are being destroyed.

The reason behind the destruction of beef is because a Humane Society investigator disguised as a worker inside the company plant of the company publicized a video showing the inhumane treatment toward the cattle. In this video it is shown that on their way to be killed, they are being poked with forklift and water hoses that were not able stand on their own.

The major problem is that the cattle that cannot walk or stand properly may be suffering from diseases and so their meats are not edible apart from the inhumane treatment. The cattle examined by a veterinary doctor before slaughtering and unsafe beef were also sent to federal nutrition program that include school lunch programs. In National school lunch program, Hallmark was the second largest supplier.

Reports say that 40% of the consumed beef were without any diseases and 30% has been found with illness. The USDA is trying to get the reports of the other 30%.

Consumers are unaware of the quality of the beef products eaten or gong to eat. The by-products of beef is sold to the whole sale distributor who in turn makes the beef in to a various number of products which include sausage, burrito filling, meat ball mix and ground beef for cooking. These products are again changed in to a number of products by the retailers.

The Hallmark Company has a wholesale number EST 336 on its products label that means Establishment 336. But those labels will be thrown out before the consumer gets it.

Operation of Hallmark Company has been stopped on February 4, 2008. There are still possibilities of withdrawals of beef, if the companies producing the beef are found unsafe.
