World Health Organization (WHO) is planning to take major step towards ban on advertisement, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco. This step will protect 1.8 billion world’s youth population from getting addicted to it. WHO is insisting all the government to restrict all their tobacco industry from doing their cultured marketing of their products.
Young population has more tendencies to adapt and acquire to what they see. Industry advertises their product and tries to link them with glamour, sex appeal and energy to attract young people. Thus imposing ban on advertisement and promotions reduces the risk of youth becoming tobacco smoker.
Dr. Margaret Chan, the director general of WHO said, “In order to survive, the tobacco industry needs to replace those who quit and die with new young consumers.” The industry markets their product so well that millions of people become addicted worldwide. This results in the decreased health condition among the young people. So she is constantly demanding government to put ban on all advertisement and promotions of tobacco.
People start smoking before the age of 18 years. And the study shows around quarter of these population starts even before they reach age of 10 years. The tobacco company advertises their product in the billboards. Children lying in the age group of 13-15 years have found looking on the advertisement. The study also shows that 1 in every 5 youth owns item with a cigarette brand logo in it.
Tobacco industry focuses on the promotion and sales of their product in the places like cinema, internet, magazines, sports and music venues which is frequently visited by the upcoming young generation. Their prime targets are young generation from the developing nations as they account for more than 80 percent of the world’s young population. Among them female and girls are in the higher risks category.
Director of WHO’s tobacco free initiative, Dr. Douglas Bettcher said: “The tobacco industry employs predatory marketing strategies to get young people hooked to their addictive drug.”
According to him, there is a decrease of tobacco consuming by 16 percent in the countries where legislative steps have been taken towards the ban of the advertisement and its promotions. He encouraged all governments to put ban on all forms of tobacco advertising.
